Planning a wedding timeline around the light

A wedding timeline is really a light plan. Where the sun sits at four o’clock decides more about your photographs than any shot list ever will. This is how I think about building a day around it — and where an unhurried day comes from.

Start with sunset, not with dinner

Most timelines are built forward from hair and makeup. Build yours backward from sunset. The prettiest thirty minutes of your wedding day are decided by the calendar, not the caterer — find that window first and let dinner move around it.

Your planner and I will do this together. It takes one conversation and it protects the photographs that end up framed.

Give the getting-ready hour room to breathe

The morning sets the tone for everything after it. When getting ready is rushed, the whole day photographs tense. An extra twenty minutes here costs nothing and buys the calm, in-between moments — the ones nobody poses for.

Leave one gap with nothing in it

A ten-minute pause after the ceremony, just the two of you. No photographs scheduled, which is exactly why the best ones happen there. The best photographs aren't directed. They're noticed.

How far in advance should we build the timeline?

As far out as needed — and it usually changes. We rebuild it together as many times as it takes, at no cost.

What if our ceremony has to be at midday?

Then we plan for it. Open shade, interiors, and a short golden-hour portrait window later in the day cover a midday ceremony without anyone feeling scheduled.
